“A Walk in the Rain”
At first it’s going to seem cold;
the drops indiscriminately touching
skin used to purposeful
but equally meaningless caresses.
The sky will take away
all of the dirt from the world,
the blood from my wounds,
the glitter of pathetic attempts
to attract and disguise,
and once I am laid bare
I will take a walk as myself,
by myself.
At first it’s going to seem cold,
but with each step more of me dissolves.
Pain.
Guilt.
Disappointment.
Fear.
…Hope.
I impose my will on the sky.
I bring down lightning
and thunder
to drown my screams of solitude.
At first it’s going to seem cold,
but I have to do this alone
because each raindrop
will eventually find relief
when absorbed back into the ground.
