    What I though of Moon…

The directing, acting, and visuals were all well done and you can pick up just about any glowing review and read all about them, but there were holes in the story that drove me bonkers.

Here’s a few of them (cut to hide spoilers)

    • …what the fuck was with the jamming towers?  Seriously.  Pretending that the lunar satellite is down is a simple matter that can be handled by software or port blocking.  They were already just pretending that it was down.  Even if they were afraid that he’d hack his way around the restrictions why not just make it so that the lunar satellite itself wouldn’t respond to him initiating communication?  Jamming towers don’t even make sense since Gertie was able to have a single live conversation.  They turned off the jamming towers just for that conversation?  Did Gertie have to send them a message via Jupiter-link and they turned off the jamming for a brief moment?  It doesn’t help the story at all.  They could have just left this whole thing out.  Plus if they were blocking through software, the bit where he goes outside the jamming perimeter and calls his daughter would never have happened.
    • …why didn’t they update Gertie’s programming to not be quite as helpful as he was?
    • …why did the dudes at the end have guns?  First, it’s completely unnecessary.  They have a great psychological profile of Sam and know that he’s non-violent.  They know he’ll be pissed off but (besides it being a monumentally stupid idea anyway) would never try to hurt them.  Second, a knife would make more sense because it’s an enclosed, airtight space.
    • …what was with the girl he hallucinated?  It was a hook that went nowhere.  By the end we know that Sam wasn’t really losing his mind and I have strong suspicions that the screen-related hallucinations were caused by Gertie and not actual hallucinations.  So why the one?
    • …what is with the lower deck?  Air is a precious resource on the moon.  Having that whole place not only filled with air but an incredible waste of space given that only Gertie will be operating down there just doesn’t make sense.

I have no problem with improbably things happening to make a story move along.  After all, the whole reason any story is worth telling is because it is extraordinary.  However, I do have a problem with writers not thinking things through and instead of unlikely things happening in a well thought out environments, stupid things happen to forced elements.
